About Phowa Course
Phowa is the Tibetan practice of consciousness transference. It is traditionally understood as guiding one’s consciousness from the body to the Pure Land of Amitabha Buddha.
According to the tradition, within several hours after death, a qualified practitioner may guide the consciousness of the deceased out through the crown of the head and toward the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. It is said that after cremation, a small, smooth opening may sometimes be seen at the top of the skull, resembling a tiny mark burned by incense.
In the secret teachings of Padmasambhava, there are six methods known as practices that can bring realization without requiring many years of training, and Phowa is regarded as one of them.
Of course, this does not mean that no practice is needed. Rather, compared with practices such as the generation stage and completion stage, Phowa can be accomplished within a relatively shorter period of time. Traditionally, the practice requires receiving the appropriate empowerment and lineage transmission, and is practiced as part of the meditative path.
